Real Sociedad back to1st Division

Real Sociedad is an historic club of the Spanish League, where has been for 40 years, but in 2007 they lost the category. Now is coming back, this year Real Sociedad has won the Second Division championship which is the voucher to play in first division again.

On the eighties it was a very popular team, still it is, but in early years of that decade the “Txuri Urdinak” (their nick name in Basque which means Blue and White) won two leagues, playing only with Basque players, most of them cane from its amateur categories. In that decade they, in 1987 exactly, they won the Spanish Cup.

Two years later the administration board of the club took an historical decision, they signed Irish international player John Aldridge from Liverpool. That shocked the blue and white crowd. After that, the only team who has continued with that philosophy is other Basque historical club, the Athletic Club Bilbao.

But the last weekend has been really special for the Real Sociedad’s fans. They won Celta de Vigo 2-0 and three years after they return to the elite. All Gipuzkoa (the Basque province of Real Sociedad) goes out to fill the pubs and “txokos” (Basque typical gathered corners) to celebrate the victory.

This week the players of the Real Sociedad have toured around Gipuzkoa visiting the main towns. An on Sunday they are going to play a non significant match against Elche.

Zorionak Real!!
